Shanghai has abundant renewable energy resources. Shanghai’s riverside areas and costal areas have abundant wind power resources, annual average wind speed is from 6.7m/s to 7.1m/s in altitude of 50m, so Shanghai could establish large wind farm. Shanghai’s annual average solar energy is 4700 GJ/m2, it belongs to areas of available solar. Shanghai has large potential for developing Green Electricity.
 

  
    Green Electricity is electricity produced from renewable resources such as wind, solar, small hydro, biomass, wave, tidal and geothermal. Generating electricity from renewable resources produces little or no harmful pollutants to air, water and land. Green electricity contributes to “greening” the energy sector by shifting towards a more sustainable and environmental friendly generation of electricity. This is why electricity from renewable resources is called green.
 
    Development of Green Electricity is an important measure for Shanghai to realize its promise which is committed during its application for World Exposition, namely, “city make life more perfect.” And development of Green Electricity is a necessary request for Shanghai’s sustainable developing stratagem.
    Shanghai has already realized its breakthrough of zero of electricity from wind, beside the Binhai Avenue, Fengxian, you will see four wind wheels rotating against the wind in the altitude of 65 meters from the ground, there is the first wind farm of Shanghai, the total amount of investment are RMB ¥ 38,000,000, the total generation capacity are 3,400 KW, In 2003, the wind farm was connected to grid and generated electricity, it can generate 6,900,000 KWh electric power all year. It is also the first wind farm established in soft ground foundation asserted at seaside mud flat, its tower is the highest in whole country. Because the tower is very high, it can get higher wind speed, so the utility efficiency of wind energy is higher. When wind speed reaches 14.5m/s, this wind power generation turbines will realize full power generation. According to measure to wind resources
    Of seaside Fengxian, the time of full power generation can reaches about 2200 hours.
The Shanghai Municipal Electric Power company cooperated with Nation Electric Power company and Shanghai Electric power Industry General Company and the project of Shanghai’s wind power generation which is jointly established by above-mentioned units in Nanhui and Fengxian and whose generation capacity are 21,000 KW will be connected to grid and generated electricity.
PV technology combining with construction has already been demonstrated with small quantity, the first 10 KW solar PV power generation system in Shanghai has already realized grid-connected generation. In addition, Shanghai also built the solar buildings such as Zoology Energy House of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai ShiMao BinJiang Garden, etc.
     Depending on the rich foundation of manufacturing industry, Shanghai actively developed the exploiture and research of equipments relevant to Green Electricity, such as PV cell and wind power generation turbines, etc. To these equipments, Shanghai has already had some production capacity. In 2002, the production capacity of solar PV cell reached 3,000,000 KW, accounting for 30% of total production capacity in whole country. The nationalization of large fan in Shanghai has already been underway, the 600KW wind power generation turbines which was developed successfully has already been manufactured and the factories which is manufacturing this equipment has get 6 purchase orders.
